The essay explores the wide range of printed works, written by Western travellers, that described the gardens of China for European readers from the 13th to the 18th Century. By analyzing texts containing extensive descriptions and attempting to an understanding of Chinese gardens composition, the project aims at re-examining the Western approach to Chinese gardens through time and at re-contextualizing the critical positions of the various protagonists
