Environmental monitoring and impact mitigation related to landfill management

A landfill can cause significant environmental impacts especially on water, air and soil. The study concentrates on the search for strategies to reduce the pollution risk of landfills. The attention is focused on the problem of a long-term impact of dry-tomb landfills and on the difficulty of controlling and limiting landfill gas emissions to the atmosphere, that concur to increase the greenhouse effect. The first objective is the experimental test of a landfill cover system that can match the acceleration of stabilization processes of organic materials. The scientific literature suggests the possibility of accelerating the process of waste stabilization in landfill, therefore reducing the risk of contamination after the post-management period. The second objective is the optimization of the biogas management, in order to treat the landfill gas with low calorific value, to capture biogas in the first stage of cultivation and in the "tail" phase.
