Abstract: This qualitative case study details the effects on the persistence of conversations about reading among reluctant readers as well as the effect that joining a book club has on a student's desire to read. Six fourth graders and their teacher librarian participated in this study from a tiny, rural location. Different reading responsibilities were taught to the students, who used them during the book discussion. In response to the research questions, the researcher found five key themes. Diverse Perspectives Deepened Understandings is the first theme. Building Relationships Provide Safety is the second theme.
