Background: Previous studies have suggested that alcohol-reinforcing effects are mediated by the endogenous opioid system, which, in turn, stimulates mesolimbic dopaminergic neurotransmission. In addition, evidence obtained in both humans and rats indicates that genetic factors may influence alcohol-drinking behavior.
