The paper analyzes the performance of electrochromic glazing that are at variable transparency; at the time, they are the more interesting components for the realization of the architectural contemporary envelope. They allow a good transparency and a large shield to solar radiation. The paper summarizes the first phase of a research project conducted by the Department of Architecture, University of Cagliari, which aims to explore the use of these materials through a simulation with appropriate computer codes.
