Tabanidae This worldwide family of Orthorrhapha flies contains almost 4,500 species (Marshall 2012, Evenhuis & Pape 2020). Rondani (1848b, 1850 c, 1851, 1863, 1868b, 1873f, 1875c) described 19 Neotropical, 13 Oriental, two Nearctic and one Palaearctic nominal species: 17 are currently considered as valid and 18 are synonyms (Fairchild 1971, Stone 1975, Wilkerson & Fairchild 1983, Chvála 1988, Coscarón & Papavero 2009). Rondani (1850 c, 1863) proposed two new replacement names and one substitute name for nominal species previously described and named by other authors.
