Members of the genus Hypericum L. are distributed worldwide but predominantly in the temperate zones of the Earth. Up to the present, almost 500 species of the genus were documented (Nürk et al., 2013, Mol Phylogenet Evol 66:1-16) but at least 40% of them have not been phytochemically characterized yet.
