Il capitolo propone una succinta storia del dibattito su mente e linguaggio negli animali non umani nella cultura italiana e europea fra Cinque e Seicento. Vengono presentati tutti gli autori chiave (da Montaigne a Fabrici d'Acquapendente, da Cartesio all'anonimo autore del Theophrastus redividus) suggerendo una tipologia dei modelli teorici coinvolti nel dibattito.This paper focuses on a number of thinkers from the Early Modernity (philosophers, physicians etc.) who credited non-human animals with cognitive capabilities, such as memory, imagination, a lower kind of reason, and - notably - communication and/or language (loquela).
