L'alliance fragile entre Rome et les Ilergètes (218-195 avant notre ère)

The societas between Rome and the Ilergetes was based on fides, whatever the precise legal nature of the ties that bound them over time. The detail escapes us for the years 218-217, but the military alliance struck by Scipio and Indibilis in 208 can be considered as a proper foedus, i.e. an agreement based on an exchange of oaths and binding upon the Roman people. This treaty was probably ratified afterwards by the Senate and the people. The defections of 206 and 205 indicate that Indibilis had a different conception of fides: he had committed himself to Scipio in a personal capacity and he considered that the alliance had ended with the defeat of Carthage in Hispania and the departure of Scipio. The deditio in fidem of 205 re-established this societas: in 195, fides was at the heart of the discussions between the Ilergetan ambassadors, who had come to ask for help, and Cato, who sought to respect his duties towards the socii while preserving his troops.La societas entre Rome et les Ilergètes a reposé sur la fides, quelle qu’ait été la nature juridique précise des liens qui ont unis ces deux peuples au fil du temps. Le détail nous échappe pour les années 218-217, mais l’alliance militaire conclue par Scipion et Indibilis en 208 peut être considérée comme un véritable foedus, c’est-à-dire un accord fondé sur un échange de serments et contraignant pour le peuple romain. Ce traité a sans doute été ratifié a posteriori par le Sénat et le peuple. Les défections de 206 et 205 indiquent qu’Indibilis avait une conception différente de la fides : il s’était engagé auprès de Scipion à titre personnel et il considérait que l’alliance avait pris fin avec la défaite de Carthage en Hispanie et le départ de Scipion. La deditio in fidem de 205 a permis de rétablir cette societas : en 195, la fides fut au cœur des discussions entre les ambassadeurs ilergètes et Caton, qui a tenté de respecter ses devoirs vis-à-vis des socii tout en préservant ses effectifs.
