In this study we selected and updated a selection of indicators on the state and development of the European research system (EU and Member State level), particularly the stock, mobility and overall career path of researchers. Attention has been paid to stocks and flows of researchers at different stages of their career (R1-R4), employed in different fields of science and across the four sectors of activity (Government, Higher Education Institutions, Business Enterprises and Not-for-Profit Organizations). This study puts particular emphasis on indicators related to various dimensions of mobility: Geographical mobility Intra-EU27 mobility and in or out of EU27 Sectorial Mobility Virtual Mobility Where data was available, the trends over the period 2000-2010 have been analysed and a comparison on the basis of the chosen indicators has been provided. We compared EU27 with other non-EU27 European countries and EU27 with its main non-EU competitors, particularly the US and Japan
