These are lecture notes on the interplay between Tensor Categories, Algebraic Quantum Field Theory, Subfactors and Quantum Groups written for the PhD course `Quantum Groups' held at the Mathematics Department of the University of Rome `la Sapienza' in the fall 2010. The aim is that of introducing the young student or researcher to this area. I have limited myself to indicate some streamlines, mainly on subjects I feel more familiar with.
