The pollen record from Valle di Castiglione, a crater lake near Rome, encompasses a number of fluctuations from forest to non-forest vegetation types over the last 250,000 years. Changes of biomass, structure and composition of vegetation at the transitions are discussed, on the basis of both pollen percentages and concentrations. The case of the Eemian is described in detail
