Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced when organic matter is burned in an inadequate supply of oxygen and is considered one of the most frequent causes of poisoning in the industrial and domestic settings. CO binds to hemoglobin, leading to the formation of carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) leading to hypoxia and subsequently to anoxia. A COHb concentration about 50–60% is usually considered fatal. Given these considerations, it is necessary the existence of validated, sensitive and reliable methods for the determination of COHb in the blood.
