Addition of hydroxide, alkoxide, and carboxylate anions to platinum bonded ethylene

The cation [Pt(η2-C2H4)Cl(tmen)]+ (I; tmen = Me2NCH2CH2NMe2) reacts with water and alc. under basic conditions (KOH) to give nucleophilic addn. of hydroxide and alkoxide anions to ethylene and formation of [Pt(CH2CH2OH)Cl(tmen)] (II) and [Pt(CH2CH2OR)Cl(tmen)] (III; R = Me, Et), resp. II, either in soln. or in the solid, undergoes a condensation reaction with formation of [(tmen)ClPt(CH2CH2OCH2CH2)PtCl(tmen)]. I also reacts with excess acetate in H2O to give the ester complex [Pt[CH2CH2OC(O)Me]Cl(tmen)] which in the solid state slowly dissocs. to acetate anion and cation I, redissoln. in CHCl3 restoring the original species. III was formed when other compds. were dissolved in MeOH
