ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters are ATP-dependentpermeases which mediate transport of a number of different substratesover biological membranes. The mechanism of resistanceconferred by over-expression of ABC transporter genes relies onincreased energy-dependent efflux, which, in turn, causes decreasedintracellular accumulation of toxicants.
