In the paper it is considered how tourism has developed in relation to the environment, examining the documents of important international bodies, whose activities frequently reflect the way that culture has evolved at the global level. It is identified the difference existing between the defining capacity of sustainable tourism and the state of the environment in the main Mediterranean areas. It concludes by defining a number of principles on which to base the initial discussion for identifying possible developments in the area of tourism that respect the cultural and natural heritage in the Mediterranean countries
