The accumulation of areas of land in the land-use change transition classes has increased their importance for the net balance of CO2 emissions/uptake in the LULUCF sector in the Swedish reporting to the UNFCCC and Kyoto protocol. This motivated an initial assessment of currently used methods for estimating emissions and uptake caused by stock changes in dead organic matter (DOM) and soil carbon. In this study we compared currently used methods for carbon stock change estimations with estimates based on a visual inspection of all the plots in the national forest inventory where land-use change had been reported.
