American beech, Fagus grandifolia Ehrhart, is a dominant species in cove hardwood, northern hardwood and hemlock forests. Beech bark disease (BED), which can cause mortality of American beech, is a complex which includes beech scale, Cryptococcus fagisiiga Lindinger, and the ftingi Nectria galligena Bresadola and N. coccinea vsiv.faginata Lohman, Watson, and Ayers. Beech scale was accidentally introduced into North America from Europe on stocks of European beech, Fagus sylvatica Linnaeus, in the 1890s.
