(Without) Spaces and Times for Death

[EN] The invisibilisation of death, its medicalisation and bureaucratisation, the denial of its times and spaces in contemporary culture, hinder its cultural treatment through rituals, especially collective ones. A symptom of this refusal to consider death as a component of our common experience is the visceral rejection of the typically Victorian post-mortem photograph. However, there have been many different ways of dealing symbolically with death throughout the history of the West. Spaces dedicated to burial and commemoration of the dead have historically also been zones of conflict. Tackling collective tasks of the widest scope, such as climate change, must lead us to reposition ourselves in secular time frames, in which our actions (once again) acquire a significance that is not limited to our lifetimes. We will surely also see the emergence of ways of building legacies, also architectural or urbanistic, in which the aim will be to lighten the burden of future generations, expanding their capacities for action, instead of enduringly embodying our designs in time. This is what Greta Thunberg refers to as cathedral thinking . Perhaps we will detect these changes in the experience of death through the widespread composting of our mortal remains, thereby re-introducing them to cycles of fertility.[ES] La invisibilización de la muerte, su medicalización y burocratización, la (de)negación de sus tiempos y espacios en la cultura contemporánea, dificultan su tratamiento cultural a través de ritos, especialmente colectivos. Un síntoma de este rechazo a considerar la muerte como componente de nuestra experiencia común es el rechazo visceral a la fotografía postmortem, tan victoriana. Sin embargo, se han dado a lo largo de la historia de Occidente muy diversas formas de tratar simbólicamente la muerte. Los espacios dedicados al enterramiento y conmemoración funeral han sido históricamente también zonas de conflicto. El afrontamiento de tareas colectivas de amplísimo calado, como el cambio climático, nos debe llevar a resituarnos en marcos temporales seculares, en los que nuestras acciones (re)cobran un sentido no limitado a nuestra vida. Seguramente también veremos emerger formas de construir legados, también arquitectónicos o urbanísticos, en los que el objetivo estará en aligerar la carga de las generaciones venideras, ampliando sus capacidades de acción, en lugar de materializar perdurablemente nuestros diseños en el tiempo. Es lo que Greta Thunberg llama cathedral thinking. Quizá detectaremos estos cambios en las vivencias de la muerte a través de la generalización del compostaje de nuestros restos mortales, reintegrados así a ciclos de fertilidad.Luque Pulgar, E.
