This review collates the results obtained in more than 100 scientific publications regarding the performance of concrete with granular coal combustion products (GCCP, commonly referred to as coal bottom ash in literature) as a partial substitute for conventional aggregate. The effects of this by-product on the workability, density and mechanical and durability related properties were analysed. Some conclusions and recommendations are provided to facilitate future research. These recommendations include conducting careful assessments of the specific gravity and water absorption properties of GCCP, replacing conventional aggregate by volume, and compensating the water absorption of GCCP.
