Development of analytical spectrometry methods for determination of selenium in herbal dietary supplements

U ovom radu razvijen je postupak određivanja sadržaja selenija i odabranih elemenata u osamdeset i sedam različitih uzoraka biljnih dodataka prehrani koji su prikupljeni na hrvatskom tržištu u obliku kapsula, praha, džema ili tekućine. Metodom elektrotermičke atomske apsorpcije uz hvatanje in situ razvijenog hidrida na iridijem obloženoj grafitoj kiveti (HG-ETAAS) izmjerene su koncentracije selenija. Primjenom spektrometrije masa uz induktivno spregnutu plazmu (ICP-MS) izmjereni su sadržaji dvadeset i četiri elementa (Se, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, Tl, V, Zn) u svim uzorcima. Mjerne sposobnosti dvije metode nisu se značajno razlikovale i obje metode jednako ispunjavaju zahtjeve za određivanje sadržaja selenija u biljnim dodatcima prehrani. Multivarijatnim statističkim alatima, analizom glavnih komponenata (PCA) i hijerarhijskom analizom klastera (HCA), klasificirani su dobiveni elementni profili i omogućena je vizualizacija i korelacija specifičnih elementnih profila ispitivanih uzoraka. Iz dobivenih elementnih profila potvrđeni su posebni utjecaji botaničkih, okolišnih i/ili proizvodnih uvjeta na elementni profil biljnih dodataka prehrani.In this work, the determination of selenium and selected elements in eighty-seven different herbal dietary supplements present at Croatian market in the forms of capsules, powder, tablets, jams, and liquors were analyzed. Electrothermal atomic absorption was applied with in situ trapping of generated hydride on iridium coated graphite cuvette (HG-ETAAS) for the determination of selenium. By inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS), the twenty-four elements (Se, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, K, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, Tl, V, Zn) were determined in all samples. Measurement capabilities of both methods were not significantly different and both methods are applicable for selenium analysis in herbal dietary supplements. By using multivariate statistical tools, principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), elemental profiles of samples were classified. This allowed visualization and correlation of specific elemental profiles of examined samples. Distinctive features of herbal dietary supplements with peculiar influences of botanical, environmental and/or production conditions on their elemental profile were highlighted
