Protein turnover is the rate of protein synthesis and degradation that does not result in a change in protein mass but serves to renew body proteins, which is vital for the maintenance and survival of animals. Nevertheless, this mechanism strongly impacts the energy expenditure of the animal as well as the metabolic use of nitrogen. Protein turnover has been suggested as a major determinant of inter-individual variation in feed efficiency (FE) in ruminants.
