Gyroscopes are rotation rate sensors used in various fields, such as consumer electronics, automotive, aeronautics and military applications. Three main categories of gyroscope technologies can be distinguished: mechanical, vibratory (MEMS) and optical. The choice of the technology category depends on the targeted application: while optical gyroscopes are very accurate, they are expensive and bulky. MEMS gyroscopes are cheap to manufacture but have limited sensitivity. The needs of emerging applications such as autonomous navigation require the development of gyroscopes that are compact, accurate, and low cost.
