Artificial reefs (ARs) are coastal management tools, voluntarily deployed by humans in order to protect, produce (increase or regenerate) or concentrate marine resources. Worldwide, ARs were originally used for fishery purposes (production and protection). However, for nearly a decade, they have also been used for ecological engineering in order to restore specific habitat functionalities (eco-functional) or to develop economic leisure activities (recreational).
