RESUMEN: El ojo humano es un sistema óptico de una potencia aproximada de 60 dioptrías. Gran parte se debe a la córnea, que tiene una potencia de refracción fija de 43 dioptrías; el resto es debido al cristalino, que se trata de una lente biconvexa con una potencia variable gracias a un proceso denominado acomodación. Otra característica del cristalino es que su índice de refracción no es constante, sino que varía siguiendo un gradiente de índice (GRIN). Esta magnitud alcanza su valor máximo en el centro de la lente debido a la acumulación de proteínas en las fibras del núcleo, y va disminuyendo hasta la corteza.
