Le tableau d’Anne-Louis Girodet : Guillaume Thomas Raynal et Jean-Baptiste Belley. La réhabilitation du philosophe ?

This painting of Girodet dating back to 1797 can be inscribed in a triple historical context that is articulated around the French Revolution, the revolution of slaves in Saint-Domingue as well as the debates of the Enlightenment about slavery, and finally the slave trade with the legitimacy of colonies as exemplified by the bust of Raynal. The bust of renowned Guillaune-Thomas Raynal is represented here alongside the black Member of Parliament. Raynal died on the 4th of April 1796. An anti-slavery campaigner since the 1770s, Raynal embodied the radical side of the fight against the colonial system of his time. But, and this is crucial to analyse the implications of the painting, Raynal had been vastly discredited in the patriotic public eye by the time he died. The rupture between the philosopher, also considered as a prophet of the French Revolution, and the revolutionaries happened suddenly, through a reading of his famous Lettre à l’Assemblée nationale on the 31st of May 1791, in front of the National Constituent Assembly. In the letter, he denounced revolutionary work, rejecting a great part of the engagement that contributed to his fame. His presence at the centre of the painting was therefore equated to redemption : although he did not fully measure the ramifications of the on-going revolution in Saint Domingue, he however predicted and announced the arrival of a « new Spartacus ». Girodet therefore associated Raynal with Belley - the « new Spartacus » , the embodiment of the liberated and liberating Black, present at the very heart of the capital of the Revolution.Ce tableau de Girodet, daté de 1797, s’inscrit dans un triple contexte historique reliant la Révolution française, la Révolution des esclaves de Saint-Domingue et l’évocation des débats des Lumières autour de l’esclavage, de la traite négrière et de la légitimité des colonies à travers la présence marquée du buste de Raynal. Le personnage central, Jean-Baptiste Belley, fut le premier député noir siégeant dans une assemblée nationale française. Le buste du fameux Guillaume-Thomas Raynal est ici représenté aux côtés du député noir. Raynal était mort le 4 avril 1796. Grand pourfendeur de l’esclavage et de la traite dès les années 1770, Raynal avait incarné la lutte radicale contre le système colonial de son siècle. Mais, et c’est essentiel pour interpréter la portée du tableau, Raynal au moment de sa mort était en grande partie déconsidéré aux yeux du public patriote. La rupture entre le philosophe, réputé prophète de la Révolution, et les révolutionnaires est intervenue brutalement, par la lecture devant l’Assemblée constituante de sa fameuse Lettre à l’Assemblée nationale du 31 mai 1791 par laquelle il dénonçait l’oeuvre révolutionnaire, reniant en grande partie les engagements qui avaient fait sa gloire. Ainsi, sa présence au centre du tableau valait rédemption : celui qui avait annoncé la venue imminente d’un « nouveau Spartacus » , s’il n’avait pas su prendre la mesure de la Révolution en cours à Saint-Domingue, en avait tout de même été l’annonciateur. Girodet associait ainsi le philosophe Raynal à Belley, « Spartacus nouveau » , incarnation du Noir libéré et libérateur au sein même de la capitale de la Révolution.Dorigny Marcel.
