Tanganyika lacustral transports. Lake Tanganyika, 660 km long, 25 to 60 km wide, 1470 m deep, and with a surface of 32 000 km², is a wonderful lacustral route for the riparian countries, Burundi, Zaire, Zambia, Tanzania. The Germans were the first ones to improve that lacustral route thanks to ports of Bujumbura and Kigoma and thanks to the railways which links Kigoma to Dar-es-Salaam. Afterwards Belgium favoured the long Congolese route which gets to Matadi on the Atlantic ocean. However, the colonial power did not neglect lacustral traffic, by managing the two most important ports of the lake, Albertville and Bujumbura. At the end of the eighties, the lacustral traffic is less important than what it used to be at the end of the fifties...
