Modélisation et cartographie du risque d’éclosion d’incendie de forêt dans le Nord-Ouest du Maroc (région de Chefchaouen-Ouazzane)

Modelling and mapping forest fire ignition risk in North-West Morocco (Chefchaouen-Ouazzane Region). This study explores the possibility of modelling and mapping the probability of forest fire ignitions on 229 000 ha of forests in Chefchaouen-Ouazzane region, located in North-West Morocco, using GIS techniques. The geographic information system was used to locate 608 forest fires recorded between 1997 and 2011. Modelling the forest fires ignitions was based on the principle which states that to produce and maintain a fire (fire triangle), there must be at the same time oxygen, fuel and the heat of combustion for exothermic reaction. The human action was apprehended by calculating a parameter called “Firing Annual Pressure (FAP)”, on a 4 km² grid cell. In order to generate the final map of forest fire ignitions probability, the FAP was combined with the data on forest vegetation flammability and with those related to topoclimate, mainly aspect and wind directions. For the case study, 118 forest fires recorded during the period 2012-2013, were used to test the prediction accuracy of the forest fire ignitions probability map. Although the Khi2 statistical test showed that the observed values (period 2012-2013) do not fit with the theoretical values (period 1997-2011), a major interest should be given to the results of the forest fire ignitions probability map. In fact, we were able to predict 58 % of fires reported in 2012 and 2013, for two important levels of risk, medium and high. The forest fire ignitions probability map could operationally improve the alerts processes, the lookout posts positioning and the early intervention against fires by the units in charge of initial attacks. It should be emphasized that in this study ways of improving are proposed in order to increase the accuracy of the forest fire ignitions probability map.Cette étude examine la possibilité de modélisation et de cartographie par SIG de la probabilité d’éclosion d’incendies de forêts sur une superficie forestière de 229 000 ha située dans la région de Chefchaouen-Ouazzane au nord-ouest du Maroc. Le système d’information géographique a été utilisé pour la localisation de près de 608 feux de forêt, enregistrés entre 1997 et 2011. La modélisation des éclosions des incendies de forêts est développée sur le principe que, pour produire un feu et l’entretenir (triangle du feu), il faut la présence en même temps de l’oxygène, du combustible, de la chaleur d'inflammation et de la réaction exothermique. L’action anthropique a été appréhendée par le calcul d’un paramètre appelé la pression annuelle de mise à feu (PAMF) sur une grille de 4 km². Cette PAMF a été combinée avec les données d’inflammabilité des types de végétations forestières et avec celles du topoclimat, notamment les expositions et les directions du vent, pour générer la carte finale de probabilité d’éclosion. Ensuite, les incendies de forêts enregistrés durant la période 2012-2013, au nombre de 118, ont servi pour tester la précision de prévision de la carte de probabilité d’éclosion. Bien que le test statistique Khi² montre que les valeurs observées (2012-2013) ne s’ajustent pas aux valeurs théoriques (1997-2011), la carte de probabilité d’éclosion permet cependant de prédire, pour les 2 classes importantes de risque moyen et élevé, 58 % des incendies déclarés durant les années 2012 et 2013. Cette carte pourrait, sur le plan opérationnel, améliorer les processus d’alerte et le positionnement des postes de guets et des unités d’intervention chargées des attaques initiales des feux naissants.
