The dispersal of first year birds in a sedentary population of buzzards (Buteo buteo) was studied in the Département de la Creuse (Central France) from 1976 onward. Altogether, 1 680 birds were ringed, 484 colour-marked, 7 radiotracked, and their behaviour recorded. The diet of these juveniles was studied through pellet analysis, and the availability of the major prey categories (voles and insects) estimated. The young buzzard leaves its parents’ territory at 3 months of age, never having been familiar with more than a small part of it.
