The social organization of a Roe deer population living in an open agricultural environment of the Paris basin was studied from January 1983 to September 1984. The study area (900 ha) was made up of a mosaic of cropland (79 %) and woodland (14 %). The population density averaged 17 roe deer per 100 ha. Fifteen roe deer (6 males and 9 females) were marked (3 collarmarked and 16 radiocollared) and followed by direct observation and radiotracking. The social organization of this population definitely changes with the seasons. During spring and summer, roe deer mostly live alone (in 65 % of the cases, N = 528), in doe/fawn pairs, or in buck/doe pairs.
