Salarias (Lophalticus kirkii, Blennioidea, Salariidae) and mudskippers (Periophtalmus sobrinus, Gobioidea, Periophtalmidae) are both amphibious fish. They are found in the upper intertidal zone of the western coast of Madagascar, where they live in two very different environments, rocky shores and mangrove swamps. Their morphological and behavioural adaptations to terrestrial life (use of shelters, locomotion and diet) are also different, though both species spend most of their adult life out of water. Salarias are herbivorous fishes, whereas mudskippers catch small prey in the surface layer of the freshly emerged mud at low tide.
