International audienceThe methodological procedure that the author has adopted to study the blocks, pebbles and plates used in the Palaeolithic period can of course be adapted to other remains. It has already been applied to the study of lamps and bowls and to the study of pebbles commonly called "compressors". It is carried out in four stages: 1, archaeological study of the morpho-technical characteristics of the documents; 2, experimentation; 3, recourse to ethnographic data if they exist; 4, return to the archaeological data with a set of functional hypotheses.
