International audienceToday we see the Atacama Desert areic coast as an arid and sterile place, devoid of the basic resource for life, especially water and vegetal. But one may question how much of what we see is natural and how much is product of the human previous activities. In this sense, we present an historical overview of the human occupation in this coast since the European arrival and their principal productive activity, the mining, attempting to evaluate their role in the social intervention over the vegetal ecosystem and the resulting anthropization of this environment.
