During the Late Middle Pleistocene (-350,000 to -130,000 years) in Europe, Middle Paleolithic technical traditions appeared and developed. This emergence of the Middle Paleolithic is characterized by a renewal of lithic production systems in which the status of the debitage is upgraded. However, these changes did not lead to the complete disappearance of older traditions, since bifacial shaping is present throughout this period. Inherited technical practices and innovation have been efficiently merged. How can we interpret this coexistence of two lithic production systems that are totally opposed conceptually?
