Because of the growing concern about the disastrous impacts of using fossil fuels, biomass is currently one of the most popular forms of renewable energy. This project is focused on the Cosun plant in Roosendaal, which produces inulin from chicory root fibers. In this case, Cosun wants to use chicory pulp rather than sell it to farmers due to rising energy expenses and environmental concerns. Cosun is a cooperative in the Netherlands that creates foods and ingredients made from plants. Cosun consumes a lot of natural gas, thus current research is attempting to determine whether the chicory pulp may be used to reduce their energy needs.
