The Relationship between LGBT Labeling, Bullying, and Student Suicide Risk

Plan BThis paper examines LGBT labeling and its relation to student bullying and risk for suicide. Research suggests that when LGBT students reveal their true identities to their school community they are victimized by peers. Such experiences can have various repercussions on LGBT students’ suicidal ideation, attempts, and completions. Schools have the opportunity to address these bullying and suicide rates among LGBT students and promote preventative measures within their school climate. A comprehensive literature review of bullying and suicide rates among LGBT students is presented, including LGBT related stressors. Recommendations and best practices for schools regarding prevention and intervention against LGBT victimization and suicidality are offered
