The exact cause of the hepatic failure in liver cirrhosis is currently unclear, and two main theories have been proposed: the first is based on the altered hepatocyte function (sick hepatocyte hypothesis); the second on the abnormal hepatic architecture (intact hepatocyte hypothesis).
