This thesis focuses on the construction of female characters and their role in the context of 1930s short stories in Korean literature. In its analysis it attempts to take into account the ideological motivation of the authors and the specific approach of female writers which affects the portrayal of female characters. The first part introduces the political and historical context and its impact on the literary field. Established archetypes of female characters that have been appearing in older Korean literature as well as new female characters appearing with modernization are also made known.
