THE TECHNIQUES OF TEACHING ENGLISH VOCABULARY AT NINTH GRADE OF SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 8 BATU

The use of techniques in teaching is very important to support the effectiveness of teaching. The use of techniques can also determine the success of student learning achievements. To achieve the goal, the English teacher at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu has its own technique in teaching his students. Therefore, the researcher would like to know the teaching techniques used by the teacher in teaching English vocabulary at the ninth grade of SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu. The purpose of this research are : (1) To find out the techniques of teaching vocabulary used by the teacher; (2) To find out how the teacher applying the technique in the teaching and learning process; (3) To find out the teacher’s reasons of using those techniques in teaching vocabulary. In this study, the researcher used descriptive qualitative research and the subject of this study was one English teacher who taught the ninth grade at SMP Muhammadiyah 8 Batu. The data was collected through classroom observations and semi-structured interviews to the teacher. The findings showed that the teacher used four techniques in teaching vocabulary. They were game, role-play, visual and translation. There are three phases that teacher used while applying those techniques such as: pre-teaching, whilst- teaching, and post-teaching. The teacher’s reasons of choosing those techniques were: (1) using game technique: he wanted teaching and learning activities are more effective and make the students enjoy the lesson. (2) using role play technique: he wanted to prevent the level of borendom of the students. (3) visual technique: he wanted the students to further improve their vocabulary. (4) translation technique: he wanted the students to have a broad vocabulary
