Abstract: An increased risk for gastric cancer in patients with liver cirrhosis has recently been reported. This study was performed in order to determine gastric epithelial cell proliferation in cirrhotic patients and to evaluate the role of congestive gastropathy (CG) and Helicobacter pylori infection in this process. Thirty-six cirrhotic patients and 18 controls were enrolled in the study. All patients underwent endoscopy and three biopsies were performed in the antrum and three in the gastric body. The presence of H. pylori infection was assessed by a rapid urease test and histology.
