Anti-galactosyl α1-3-galactosyl (anti-Gal) is a natural serum antibody abundantly produced in humans in response to immune stimulation by enteric bacteria. Marked elevation of its titer has been detected in parasitic diseases and in some autoimmune disorders. Because persistent intestinal infection and defective mucosal barrier have been suggested as potential etiologic agents of inflammatory bowel disease, the aim of this study was to analyze the sera levels of anti-Gal antibodies in patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.
