Le phénomène rushang : une étude du renouveau confucéen dans le milieu entrepreneurial en Chine contemporaine

From the beginning of the 21st century onwards, China has witnessed a "Confucian revival" among the population. This revival of Confucianism, often associated with a revitalization of cultural tradition, is becoming increasingly widespread in the business world with many entrepreneurs who publicly claim to adhere to these values. This new trend is characterized by a resurgence of the rushang '' (Confucian merchant) model, an ancient term that originally referred to a new type of merchants in the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) who were close to literati circles. Based on a field survey conducted between 2016 and 2020 within three private companies as well as a study of the organization of the Bo'ao Rushang Forum, this thesis aims to understand the nature and various aspects of the "rushang" phenomenon. Using a socio-anthropological approach, our research attempts to shed light on the ways this phenomenon emerges and spreads in society. We are also interested in the motives behind the involvement of these Confucian entrepreneurs, as well as in the role played by other actors, such as officials and intellectuals. A historical perspective on the term rushang reveals that this concept has undergone numerous mutations throughout history. The new interpretation of this ancient term is in reality a process of reinvention of tradition. In today's modernized and globalized China, the reference to "Confucian" values in companies can be understood to some extent as a moral justification of Chinese capitalism.À partir du début du XXIe siècle, la Chine voit apparaître un « renouveau confucéen » au sein de la population. Cette renaissance du confucianisme, souvent associée à une revitalisation de la tradition culturelle, connaît un engouement particulier auprès d'un grand nombre d'entrepreneurs qui revendiquent publiquement leur adhésion à ces valeurs. Cette nouvelle tendance s'accompagne notamment d'un retour en force du modèle du rushang '' (marchand confucéen), un terme ancien qui désignait sous la dynastie des Ming (1368-1644) un nouveau type de commerçants, proche des milieux lettrés. En nous appuyant sur une enquête de terrain effectuée entre 2016 et 2020 au sein de trois entreprises privées ainsi que sur une étude de l'organisation du Forum rushang de Bo'ao, cette thèse a pour objectif de comprendre la nature et les différents aspects du phénomène « rushang ». En mobilisant une approche socio-anthropologique, notre recherche tente de mettre en lumière les manières dont ce phénomène émerge et se diffuse dans la société. Nous nous intéressons également aux motifs de l'engagement de ces entrepreneurs se réclamant de la tradition « confucéenne », ainsi qu'au rôle joué dans ce mouvement par d'autres acteurs, politiques et intellectuels. Une mise en perspective historique du terme rushang révèle que ce concept a connu un certain nombre de mutations tout au long de l'histoire. La nouvelle interprétation de cette ancienne appellation constitue en réalité un processus de réinvention de la tradition. Dans une Chine aujourd'hui modernisée et globalisée, le recours aux valeurs « confucéennes » peut être considéré dans une certaine mesure comme une justification morale du capitalisme chinois
