The collection consists of a booklet titled, The Correspondence between the Commissioners of the State of South Carolina to the Government at Washington and the President of the United States: together with the statement of Messrs. Miles and Keitt. This booklet includes the correspondence between the government of the seceded state of South Carolina, James Buchanan, President of the United States and other government entities. The letters are concerned with South Carolina’s desire to inform the President of their willingness to negotiate terms for a peaceful dissolution of their ties to the United States government and their request that all Federal troops be withdrawn from Fort Sumter and Buchanan’s refusal to withdraw troops whom he deemed were protecting the public property of the United States. South Carolina Commissioners were Robert W. Barnwell, James H. Adams, and James L. Orr. There is also a statement of William Porcher Miles and Lawrence M.
