Just six wildfires caused nearly all of the $13 billion in property damage and loss from large fire incidents in 2018 in the United States. That same year, 88 people were killed in the devastating Camp Fire that obliterated the town of Paradise, California. As millions of Californians face rounds of recurring blackouts to avoid sparking the next big blaze, it is increasingly clear that this new normal is not sustainable. Without a significant shift from fighting wildfires to preparing for them, moving to a sustainable future seems unlikely.
