Amniocenteses was brought into India in 1975, as a measure of detecting genetic disorders and abnormalities; unfortunately this invention of science has resulted in quickening the pace of the death of the female child from the born to the unborn stage. Female feticide has come to replace female infanticide demonstrating that the social attitude to the birth of a female child has not changed. Amniocentesis in India has become synonymous with the sex determination test, which has led to sex selective abortions. In response to an official directive, government hospitals stopped the misuse of this technique for sex determination, but it only resulted in the opening up of avenues for commercialisation in the private sector
