This thesis is submitted as part of the Doctorate in Forensic Clinical Psychology at the School of Psychology, University of Birmingham. It comprises two volumes. Volume I: Research Component Volume I consists of a systematic literature review and an empirical paper. The systematic literature review presents the identification and critical evaluation of quantitative measures of personal recovery in forensic settings. The empirical paper presents a qualitative study exploring staff perspectives of personal responsibility in forensic mental health.
