Teaching Through English the International Studies Subjects at the Department of International Studies, University of Foreign Language Studies, University of Danang: the Status Quo and Suggested Solutions

In the present age, higher education is to open the door to horizons of progressive knowledge and to provide access to human advances in various fields. As Graddol (1997, p. 45) already remarked, “One of the most significant educational trends worldwide is the teaching of a growing number of courses in universities through the medium of English”. In Vietnam, the project “Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages in the National Education System, Period 2008-2020” has set as one of the major targets for the stage 2011-2015 “the implementation of teaching in foreign languages for some basic subjects, sectors and for intensive training at some strategic sectors in senior years.” This paper is aimed at researching the status quo of using English in teaching International Studies at the Department of International Studies, University of Foreign Language Studies, the University of Danang., which serves as a basis for suggesting some feasible measures to implement English-medium instruction
