The complexity of modern electrochemical storage systems requires strategies in research to gain in-depth understandings of the fundamental processes occurring in the electrochemical cell in order to apply this knowledge to develop new conceptual electrochemical energy storage systems. On a mid- and long-term perspective, development of batteries with new chemistries is needed which could offer higher energy density, Li-free operation, better safety, use of abundant materials, lower cost, and operational flexibility at different temperatures.
