The installing of sectionalizing switches is one of the methods used to improve the reliability of distribution networks. In such networks, the annual cost of interruptions is reduced by shortening the outage duration. However, these switches need to be invested, operated and maintained. The optimizing of installing sectionalizing switches is, thus, necessary. This paper presents an optimal solution to installing sectionalizing switches on distribution networks based on dynamic programming. The optimal problem is solved by breaking it down into a collection of simpler subproblems of which the optimal solution can be found based on Bellman equations of dynamic programming.
