At the occasion of the seventieth anniversary, the author suggests a few reflections on the influence of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) while the European construction appears threatened. Constituting the basis of this construction, the ECHR could see its role expand if it is able to face the complaints aimed at it. This article outlines the history, legal impact, philosophy, but also the political aspects of the European text. Reminding its deep ancestry as well as its humanistic and democratic spirit constructed in reaction to the totalitarian regimes of the interwar period, the author sheds light upon the political and economic mutation of the post-war period which contributes to the weakening of its basis.
